Aim of the organization:
Creative Cities is a diversity focused springboard organisation promoting creative entrepreneurship in suburbs in the city of Antwerp. Antwerp is a majority-minority city with more than 170 nationalities. We believe that creativity has the power to connect citizens, regardless of their roots, social class or religion. We provide space and mentorship to starting creatives in our creative hubs to test their projects, products and services and give them a real learning by doing experience.
Describe your areas of intervention:
We work around 3 circles: (sub)urban diversity, creative entrepreneurship and empty premises. We started in 2016 in a suburb in Antwerp called Berchem in a former shopping street where 19% of the shop premises were empty/for rent. We boosted the neighbourhood by empowering creative entrepreneurs to start a creative hub in those empty premises. Since then we have opened 15 creative hubs and supported 41 creative entrepreneurs. Meanwhile, empty premises rates have dropped to 11% in our street.
